Kenneth G. McDowell

January 28, 1927 ~ February 23, 2018 (age 91)

Kenneth George McDowell passed away peacefully in Calgary on February 23, 2018 at the age of 91. Ken is survived by his niece Cathy (Lionel); nephew James (Sheila); great nieces and nephews David (Sorcha), Jessamy and Daniel. Ken was preceded in death by his parents, George and Beatrice and his brother Robert (Edith).

Ken was born on January 28th, 1927 in Claresholm Alberta.  He attended Claresholm Elementary and High School graduating in 1945 and was proud to be one of the first rural students in Canada to be bused to school.  In their teens, Ken and his brother Bob enjoyed their time with the Royal Canadian Air Cadets and time spent at the local pool hall, honing their geometry skills.  Ken furthered his education in geometry and mathematics when he attended SAIT and graduated in Surveying Technology in 1962.

Ken was self-employed as a farmer after taking over the farm from his father who homesteaded in 1916. When not tending the farm, he spent his winters surveying for the petroleum industry and was fortunate to work alongside Bob and good friend Mike Morkin.

Ken always led an active lifestyle: hunting, fishing, curling and golfing. He enjoyed spending time in the Porcupine Hills and situated the farm house to enjoy the view of these hills and Chief Mountain.  Ken was especially passionate about his involvement with the Claresholm Trap Club and enjoyed many accolades for his skills. At the drop of a hat, he would be off to shoot trap with his friends and he took great pride in helping to educate the younger members of the club in gun safety and passing on his enthusiasm for the sport.  He was also an active and dedicated member of the Claresholm Masonic Temple.

Ken continued to farm well into his late sixties. He enjoyed visiting Arizona to escape the wind and snows of Canadian winters and spent many enjoyable times there with his good friends Sharon and W.D. Smith. Ken was generous and caring to his entire family, many close friends and neighbours. He was actively involved in the lives of his niece and nephew and their families and treated them all like his own children. Ken would often say “Happy to meet, sorry to part, happy to meet again.”

A Memorial Service will be held at 11:00 AM on Wednesday, February 28th, 2018 at Willow Creek Funeral Home and a reception will follow at The Bridges at Claresholm Golf Course. Everyone is welcome to attend and celebrate Ken’s life. In lieu of flowers, if desired donations in Ken’s memory may be forwarded to the Claresholm and District Health Foundation (Box 2638, Claresholm, Alberta T0L 0T0). Ken’s family would like to thank the doctors, nurses and all health care providers at Rocky View and Claresholm General Hospitals and Cotton Wood Village for their care and kindness towards Ken.
